Info: Artist Matthew Bakkom has shown his work in exhibitions all over the world, including New York, Paris, Berlin and Dublin, but his newest solo exhibition at the Burnet Gallery in Chambers hotel on Hennepin Avenue has special significance for this Minneapolis native.

“Having a show on Hennepin Avenue is an aspirational achievement for me,” explained Bakkom. “Hennepin Avenue has such history. It’s a landmark for the city that holds so many personal memories for me and public memories for all of us. Having a show here somehow connects you to all of that.”

And making connections seems to be a recurring theme for Bakkom’s latest solo exhibition, “Strange Victory.” In the show Bakkom uses a scanner as an artistic medium to create connections between the artist and the audience, through time and space, the seen and the unseen.

Info: Artist Elizabeth Simonson uses grids, systems, sequential logic and the building blocks of nature to inspire and manifest the outcomes of her complex renderings and structures. The range in scale of her work is from hand-sized to roomsized as this exhibition will reveal. A 28-foot-long installation of tiny glass beads and wire, symbolizing genetic code
and representative of early forms of life found in the sea, will grace an entire wall. Also on display will be a series of scaled-down beaded sculptures and a selection of related drawings.

Info: For the past eight months, nine photographers and fifteen models have united at the Stevens Square Center for the Arts for day-long photo sessions. SSCA will now exhibit the surprisingly interesting results of those sessions.

These works take you behind the scenes and show the modeling sessions at every angle. The finished works range from the raw edginess of CHRIS CRISIS, to subtle portraits and insightful amateurs’ visions, to the elaborate digital magic of Cris t Halverson.

The Opening Night reception will take place on Saturday, September 12th from 7-10 pm. Meet models and photographers and enter a drawing for a free photo shoot. Also scheduled: a Youtube video of a “Photo-OP” session and live music by Ghostface Cow.

Info: Star Tribune photographers and writers, Richard Sennott and Chris Welsch teach this unique workshop at the Mpls Photo Center this weekend.
By cultivating attentiveness and timing, photographers can make a shift between shooting images that are informational, but lifeless, and those that have a sense of soul. During this weekend workshop, veteran documentary and travel photographers Rick Sennott and Chris Welsch will help students explore and express their photographic vision in dynamic landscapes, streetscapes and environmental portraits. Students will share and discuss previous work, shoot an assignment and then edit and present their work in a collaborative atmosphere. We'll also spend some time discussing and practicing the under-appreciated art of captioning. With two instructors, participants will get plenty of one-on-one coaching. The class is designed for amateur photographers who want to take their work to the next level.
