Info: Artist Matthew Bakkom has shown his work in exhibitions all over the world, including New York, Paris, Berlin and Dublin, but his newest solo exhibition at the Burnet Gallery in Chambers hotel on Hennepin Avenue has special significance for this Minneapolis native.

“Having a show on Hennepin Avenue is an aspirational achievement for me,” explained Bakkom. “Hennepin Avenue has such history. It’s a landmark for the city that holds so many personal memories for me and public memories for all of us. Having a show here somehow connects you to all of that.”

And making connections seems to be a recurring theme for Bakkom’s latest solo exhibition, “Strange Victory.” In the show Bakkom uses a scanner as an artistic medium to create connections between the artist and the audience, through time and space, the seen and the unseen.

We'll also spend some time discussing and practicing the under-appreciated art of captioning. With two instructors, participants will get plenty of one-on-one coaching. Info: Polly Norman makes photographic works that invoke the early work of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray, who experimented with photographic processes at the inception of modern photography using a direct-image -to-print process called photograms. Polly Norman's work is a reflection of this history through her layering of image, use of light, and the dark room process. She is a tinkerer and experimentor who translates real time constructions into photographic images, employing the optical nature of glass, found objects, dark room printing techniques, and the manipulation of the silver gelatin print. She uses materials and light to their fullest capacity in the printing and finishing of her black and white abstracts. Normans' work is a combination of surrealistic landscape and painterly abstract. She strategically places pieces of translucent materials on the surface of the photographic paper at the moment of exposure, which is primary to the layering of photo print and photo gram, blended as a single work . In some cases translucent color, in the form of photo oils and pencil, are added to select works, which acts as a ‘filter' where color is applied, deepening the optical field of her abstractions. Polly Normans work can be described as surreal, optical, fluid, obtuse, impressionist, and transcendent, however description does not alter, in any way, the stroke of genius the artist exhibits in her convergence of photographic history technology, process, and style.

But that was before Hurricane Katrina and the I35-W bridge collapse. That was before the nationwide housing crisis. Before the governor's 'unallotment' and cuts to Local Government Aid. Today, the future of American cities look a lot less promising, as cities struggle to get by in an era of declining revenues and decaying infrastructure.
'Benign Neglect' presents a snapshot of the urban environment as it currently exists, a refracted image of the utopian visions of 'The Next American City'.

Info: In autumn 1969, artist Robert Rauschenberg met with renowned curator John Stoller at Dayton’s Gallery 12 in Minneapolis. There they planned a major exhibition featuring a large scale print made from collages of New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis newspaper clippings. The show, Currents, opened at the Minneapolis gallery the folllowing spring. Along with the large-scale "drawing," now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and part of this exhbition, Rauschenberg produced portfolios of related prints, including "Features from Currents," which the Weisman owns. From government corruption and war to drugs and gay rights to astronomical events and the weather, the headlines in the prints give us a glimpse into our national past and a frame for how we might see the country's situation today. This exhibition, by one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, highlights the role the Twin Cities played in its conception and dissemination.

These characters and their terrible secrets are the central focus of Kuno’s work, an ever-changing story that he refers to as The Miscreants of Tiny Town. His paintings weave tales of carnage that make Grimms fairy tales look candy coated, but the lyrical execution can’t help remind you of your favorite bedtime story illustrations.

Info: Tomás Saraceno pushes the conventions of art and architecture and their capacities to invoke inventive solutions to complex questions about how we inhabit and coexist in the world. The Walker Art Center exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Lighter than Air, on view May 14 (from 5–9 pm) through August 30, showcases installations, sculptures, and photographs from 2003 to the present. Saraceno’s work was first seen at the Walker in the exhibition Brave New Worlds (2007), and in fall 2008, he brought his Museo aero solar—a continuously expanding solar-powered balloon made from hundreds of reused plastic bags—to the Walker for a residency that focused on a collective investigation to improve the balloon’s flight potential. Lighter than Air is his first large-scale museum presentation in the United States.

An event like this always begs a few exploratory questions. For years, Twin City artists Jennifer Davis and Jake Keeler have worked the local scene, unknowingly huge fans of each others work. The opportunity to show together finally came along and they jumped at the chance. While both continue to carve out their unique and developed styles in painting, drawing, and installation, this pairing of their work promises to have a dialouge and relationship that celebrates the differences, and showcases the collective talent as they expand their respective ranges.
